sptt1: Tau-Tau Head.

Toraja (from Sa'dan area). Sulawesi Island, Indonesia.
Hardwood (jackfruit-nangka). Full H: 20.5" (52 cm).
Head from Tau-Tau figure. Tau-Tau represented important ancestors.
The head has fine lines carved around the eyes. Inside the eyes are the remains of a traditional adhesive from the sap of a tree.
The notch in the head was where a bar of wood was inserted to hold the hair (made from plant fibers) in place.
Because there are holes in each ears this was a female ancestor, which are less common than male ancestor figures.
The minimal treatment is subtle and quietly effective. It is sublimely beautiful in a stark manner.
