smb1: Tobacco Box.
Iban Dayak. Sarawak State, Borneo Island, Malaysia.
Wood, rattan. L: 6.5" (16.5 cm), H: 8.2" (20.8 cm), D: 3" (7.6 cm).
The main figure represents an elephant with a long trunk and tusks, with a monkey riding on its back.
The box would hold the tobacco, with a unique feature of a plug in the rear end of the elephant,
that reveals a hole that is deep enough to hold the rolling papers or matches or rolled cigarettes.
Without question the best Iban tobacco box I have ever come across.
Field collected by Michael Palmieri in the 1970s or early 1980s.
