mrbm1: Mask

Borneo Island, Indonesia.
Wood, pigments. H: 8.25" (21 cm), ears W: 13.25" (33.7 cm), horns D: 3" (7.6 cm).

This type of mask has been associated with the Modang Dayak people living in the coastal area of the Kutai Sultanate.
It was assumed the style was influenced by Javanese masks, and the resemblance is noticeable. There are clear Dayak style
motifs around the mouth, as well as the attached ears and horn attachments, which are classic Kayanic configurations.
The mask is beautifully sculpted with a powerful expression.

Ex: Marc Richards collection, Los Angeles. Collected in the 1980s.
