kbds1: Ancestral Figure

Ngaju Dayak. Central Kalimantan, Borneo Island, Indonesia.
Hardwood. H: 41.75" (106 cm).

A standing male ancestral figure leaning on a post-like stool. The figure's knees are bent inwards and his hands are resting on his phallus.
A small number of these figures, resting back on this stool-post like structure, have come on the market over the last 40 years, with unclear origin.
This example was originally collected by Michael Sorafine of Los Angeles in the 1980s and identified as Kenyah Dayak. The bent inwards knees are similar
to a type of figure from the Kayanic groups, but I am unclear if this style is Kenyah. The type of face, body, and hands are often found on Ngaju Dayak
sculptures from Central Kalimantan and I believe this is the origin of this figure. Regardless of tribal origin, it is a compelling figure with this unusual
stance, beautiful form, and haunting expression. It has survived nearly intact for a very long time in the harsh jungle environment.
