jmdm1: Ritual Mask "Indai Guru".

Iban Dayak. Sarawak State, Borneo Island, Malaysia.
Wood, pigments, animal hair. H: 17" (43.2 cm), W: 13" (33 cm), D: 5.5" (14 cm).
Ritual mask used during festivals and normally worn with a cloth cape that covers the entire body of the dancer.
The large mask was meant to ward off malevolent spirits and to frighten misbehaving children.

Ex: Fred Wessman collection, Houston, TX.
Mr Wessman was a geophysicist working for Exxon in Sarawak during the late 1960s and collected numerous Dayak artifacts at that time.
