j3ns1: Chief's Seat.

Ibo people. Nigeria.
Hardwood. H: 27.5" (69.9 cm). W:14.5" (36.8 cm), D: 15.5" (39.4 cm).
A seat or stool, carved from a single block of hard, heavy wood, and blackened. With a circular base, joined by a central column to the slightly concave seat.
At the front of the base is a human head below a stylized animal. The back of the stool is intricately carved in openwork with caryatid figures, male and female,
supporting the seat and the upper construction. At both sides of the raised back are two highly stylized, flattened, crested human heads on tubular necks.
Good, fine aged patina, scattered nicks, hairline cracks, scratches and small losses. 19th century.
