da1: Rattan Splitter.

Kayanic Dayak complex (probably Modang-Ga'ay). East Kalimantan, Borneo Island, Indonesia.
Hardwood, pigments. L: 26" (66 cm), H: 6.25" (15.9 cm), W: 6.25" (15.9 cm).
A pair of metal knife blades were stuck into the top of the front block piece, pointed forwards and inwards at various widths, to allow rattan to be pulled
through and split into long strips. The user would put their knee on the plank sticking out the back to stablize the block while pulling the rattan strips.
Unusual example with protective mask painted in the colors of a classic Kayanic Hudoq dance mask.
The back flat plank has stylized dragon and ancestral spirit motifs.
