brds2: Ancestral Figure w/ Baby "Patong".

Ngaju Dayak. Central Kalimantan, Borneo Island, Indonesia.
Hardwood. H: 45” (114.3 cm).
Not currently mounted but a custom plate will be included.

Wood statue representing a male ancestor of high status. The figure is wearing a Malay style hat that would have indicated
someone well connected to coastal trading or political entities. He is holding a baby to his chest, perhaps a symbol of fertility.
There is a crocodile hanging onto his back and he is resting on an image of serpent or dragon, both symbols of the lower world.
These two animal figures would add power and prestige to the ancestral figure.

Ex: Richard and Jan Baum collection, Los Angeles.
