bhc1: Pair of Rice Paddy Guardians.

Ibanic-Dayak complex (probaby Kantu). Western Borneo Island, Indonesia or Malaysia.
Hard wood, glass seed beads. Male H: 15" (38.1 cm), Female H: 14.75" (37.5 cm).
Pair of Male/Female rice paddy guardian figures with aggressive protective expressions.
Glass seed beads are inserted for eyes.

Each figure has an interesting angled cut on the back of each head, both the same size but on the opposite side as the other.
This is not damage or erosion, but intentionally removed long ago, but not exactly sure why.
Perhaps these two pieces were cut off to be used in a magic potion (like the pieces cut from other Dayak charms)
or perhaps this was done so the two figures could fit specifically in a precise location.

The surface of these figures are darker than the photos show. I had to add a extra light to reveal more detail.

Ex: Bobbi Hamill collection, Boston, MA.
