Timor Island, Indonesia.
Hardwood with snail shell plugs for eyes, like those found in New Ireland statues. H: 16.5” (41.9 cm).
Bust of a male figure from an indoor ritual shrine or altar. The figure has square eyes, cap or hair like structure, with an oddly shaped nose.
There are etched markings on the front of this piece including a chicken/bird and what appears to be letters. The ink writing is in old style Dutch.
It is supposed to be a name: "Moeni Obe", followed by “God from Timor”. Moeni is the old way to spell Muni.
Ex: Dutch-Indonesian collection, circa 1940s.
