4734: Garuda Temple Figure
Bali Island, Indonesia.
Wood. H: 8" (20.3 cm), W: 8.25" (20.9 cm), D: 6.5" (16.5 cm).
A temple figure in the form of a half man/half eagle Garuda figure (also possibly the vulture Jatayu).
It is likely this piece comes from the rural highlands area of Bali, possibly from Sebatu-Taro.
Vigorous and more stylized, their imagery is a combination of Hindu characters
and a more tribal aesthetic rooted in traditions dating back to pre-Hinduism.
