Katapan (or Ketapang) Dayak. West Kalimantan, Borneo Island, Indonesia.
Wood, traces of pigments. L: 54" (137.2 cm), Max W: 22.5" (57.2 cm), Max H: 29.5" (74.9 cm).
Positioned on top of an ancestral shrine, this assemblage represents a water snake (or dragon) with the wings of a hornbill.
As a morphing of two powerful symbols of the underworld and upperworld, this guardian figure would have
protected important ancestors on their journey to the afterlife.
