Unknown Dayak group (possibly Kayanic). Borneo Island, Indonesia.
Hardwood. H: 16.2" (41.2 cm). Mounted, not shown in photos.
Rare Dayak door lock with a complex and bizarre display of carved figures. It is difficult to interpret each of the figures and their relationship to each other.
There is a dragon mouth like structure (when viewed horizontally) that appears to have figures inside and holding onto the outside. The legs and arms of these
figures give the impression of the fangs of the dragon mouth. There is a mask on one side associated with limbs that are also associated with other figures and another
face at the top, with another image that appears to be a bird beak or mask. I have spent hours looking at the figures and each time another interpretation is revealed.
