Wood, pigments, animal hair. Without hair, H: 7.75” (19.7 cm), W: 7.75" (19.7 cm), D: 4" (10.2 cm). With hair, H: 9.5" (24.1 cm).
These masks appear to represent outsiders, probably Europeans.
It is unclear of their usage and it was once thought they were worn during ceremonies to poke fun at the European colonists.
Michael Heppell suggests in "Communing with the Dark Side, Borneo Masks & Masquerades" they may have been used to remove evil spirits from the the longhouse.
