Yami. Orchard Island, Taiwan (Formosa Island).
Hardwood, pigments. Max Dia: 14” (35.6 cm), Min Dia: 13” (33 cm), Max D: 1” (2.54 cm). Early-mid 20th century.
Rare carved and painted ritual dish with human figures that represent a cultural hero named “Magamoas", who taught the people the art of boat building and agriculture.
The circular motif is called "Mata No Tatara" (the eyes of the canoe), often found on the bow and sterns of Yami canoes.
