kjl1: Ancestral Altar Figure.

Leti Island, Indonesia.
Hardwood, shell. H: 9" (22.9 cm).
A classic example of a Leti Island ancestral altar figure, sitting in the “hunkered” position with legs pulled to the chest, arms resting on the knees.
There are shell inlays to enhance the eyes.

The figure was recently required from an East Coast source who bought it from the niece of the original owner. According to the niece, the original owner was her aunt:
Meta Leget, a German art dealer prior to WWII, who immigrated to America before the war. The piece remained in the family collection until recently sold.
There are collection numbers painted on the back of the statue, but they are not easy to read accurately.
It could be the collection number for the original owner mentioned above, or perhaps numbers from an earlier collection.
