jc7: Waist Cloth.

Kayanic Dayak complex (probably Modang-Ga'ay). East Kalimantan, Borneo Island, Indonesia.
Embroidery on cotton trade cloth. H: 32" (81.3 cm), W: 47.5" (120.7 cm). 19th to early 20th century.
Waist cloth or hip wrap with embroidered motifs of spirit figures, stars, and what appears to be stylized houses or mountains above the waves of a river.
There is another star figure at the top of the cloth. It is possible the stars and spirit figures represent the upper world,
the house or mountain like motifs represent the middle world, and the wave like motifs represent the lower world.
There is some damage, including several holes in the background cloth, but the embroidery is intact. Embroidery is very rare in Dayak textiles.
