jc3: Cover for Ancestral Shrine.

Ga'ay (Modang). Berau region, East Kalimantan, Borneo Island, Indonesia.
Wood (Kayu Aru), shells. L: 76.5" (194.3 cm), Max W: 18.5" (47 cm), 18th to 19th century.

The primary motif (viewed vertically) represents a complex version of a stylized “Tree-of-Life” motif growing straight up the center of the cover, from the base
of the sacred mountain at the bottom. The tree is full of curled branches and deconstructed body parts of guardian spirits with at least one stylized dragon head motif
(seen near the bottom left, facing up). Image “d” and “e” show close-ups of two claw like hands with intertwined fingers similar to the ones displayed
on the side panels from the same Ancestral Shrine: jc2A and jc2B, currently offered in the New Acquistions Gallery.
