Keyaki wood, pigments. H: 13.25" (33.7 cm), W: 14" (35.6 cm), D: 13" (33 cm).
Printed label on bottom states: "Monju-Bosatsu, Japanesese. God of Wisdom. C. 1820." There is untranslated Japanese script carved into the underside as well.
One of four great Bodhisattva of Asia, Monju, shown with the mythical guardian lion/dog (shi-shi), personifies wisdom, the voice of Buddhist law, and wisest of the Bodhisattva.
In modern Japan, students pay homage to Monju in the hopes of passing school examinations and becoming gifted calligraphers.

Ex collection: Robert Charles Fisher (pen name: Robert Haru Fisher), former president and editor-in-chief of Fodor travel guides, who lived in post-war Japan.
He was once a consultant to later Japanese Prime Minister Takeo Miki and a contract agent with the CIA's International Organization Division in Asia.
