MS1: Headhunting Sword (Mandau).

Kayanic Dayak. East Kalimantan, Borneo Island, Indonesia.
Wood, metal, rattan, bone. Full length: 27.75”.
Mandau, with a very rare type of handle, carved from the natural shape of root wood. The curved shape represents a dragon figure (Aso) with scales.
The sheath is shaped from an attractive reddish wood, with another abstracted dragon figure (Aso) carved in low relief near the mid point.
There are bone inserts at the tip and top, with beautiful rattan work (one of the most under-rated aspects of Mandau craftsmanship in my opinion).
Additionally, there is an animal tooth amulet attached to the waist strap. The blade has some nice details, but it is a bit rusted.
