3696: Sword Handle.

Kayanic Dayak (probably Modang or Ga'ay). East Kalimantan, Borneo Island, Indonesia.
Sambar deer antler. L: 4.25" (10.8 cm).
Headhunting sword (mandau) handle with intricate and detailed carvings of miniature guardian figures and abstract Asos.
Of special interest is the Maori-like face, with extended tongue, when the handle is viewed from the bottom.
The handle is missing the rattan binding and has broken areas along the grip. A special stand was made to contained the damaged area within a metal tube.
