3639: Altar Sculpture.

Unknown Dayak group, West or Central Kalimantan, Borneo Island, Indonesia.
Hard wood. H: 13.75" (34.9 cm).
Unusual sculpture of a figure, possibly a spirit, riding on the back of a monkey.
The function is not clear. It could be a large charm, but there is a square hole in the top of the rider's head
that held another piece. It may have been a post with cup, used as an offering recepticle or oil lamp.
There are subtle details on both figures and two mysterious holes in the back of the rider's headdress (or hair?), also of unknown function.
