3637: Shield.

Reported to come from Borneo Island, Indonesia (or Malaysia).
Wood, pigments. H: 26.5" (67.3 cm), W: 13.75" (34.9 cm), D: 3.25" (8.3 cm).
The shield is unquestionable old, used and from Indonesia (or Malaysia), but the exact location or culture is not clear.
The shape is similar to shields made by the Bidayuh Dayak of Sarwark State, Malaysia, but the painted motif is of a Barong mask from Bali Island.
There are no known shields in this form from Bali, nor am I aware of any Dayak group that would use a motif from Bali.
It is possible it comes from Balinese/Javanese migrants living along the coastal areas of Borneo Island, who adapted a Borneo style form for their shield.
Regardless of the specific origin, it is a rare subgroup or one-off with beautifully painted motifs.
