3602: Pigeon Whistle

China.
Bamboo, lacquer. H: 2" (5.1 cm), D: 1.5" (3.8 cm), W: .75" (1.9 cm).
In China there has been a long tradition of attaching these light whistles - often made from gourd or bamboo -
to the tail feathers of a flock of pigeons, so when the birds fly, the wind blowing through the whistles sets them vibrating.
These whistles are intended to keep the flock together and to protect the pigeons from attacks by birds of prey.
