3547: Sword Handle.
Batak. Sumatra Island, Indonesia.
Buffalo horn, brass or bronze. H: 4.5" (11,4 cm).
Rare handle with multiple imagery. The main figure is a animal with scales that covers most of the back of the handle, hunching over the top.
It appears to have an elephant trunk. That animal holds another small figure in its hands (not easy to make out because of the wear).
There is a lizard on the back of the main figure. Below the lizard appears to be a pair of buffalo horns and blow the horns, another mysterious motif.
Looking up at the front of the face of the main animal figure, and using the large open spaces as eyes, it appears to form a eerie looking ghost (spirit) like mask.
