3399: Animal Effigy.

Probably Ngaju Dayak. South-Central Kalimantan, Borneo Island, Indonesia.
Wood, pigments. L: 19.5” (49.5 cm), H: 9.5” (24.1 cm), D: 3” (7.6 cm). Early-mid 20th century.
Mythical animal effigy, representing a serpent or water snake with the elegant form of a hornbill beak projecting out of the head of the main figure.
It is possible that the long tail of the serpent represents another stylized hornbill beak.
The serpent like figure represents the underworld and the hornbill represents the upperworld.
