1883: Door.
Kayanic Dayak complex (probably Modang). East Kalimantan, Borneo Island, Indonesia.
Hard wood. H: 38" (96.5 cm), W: 19.5" (49.5 cm). 19th to early 20th century.
Door for aristocrat's apartment within a traditional longhouse.
The front side has motifs consisting of a protective "monster" face with four Aso figures in each corner and a spear like tree of life in the middle.
The back side has a archaic style Aso figure used as a handle. The Aso's body morphs into a single leg and/or arm with a claw like foot or hand.
